Episode 6 - Parents are representatives of God

Navarathri, the 9 day festival is dedicated to Goddess Durga and her 9 incarnations. It is the celebration of Goddess Durga's Victory over the demon Mahishasura- Victory of Good over Evil. We too might have some demonic/bad qualities in us and for that, we have our own personal Goddess at home-our very own Mother who is the perfect person to demonstrate the 9 virtues to us and help us remove the corresponding 9 vices from our character. The Omnipresent God takes care of us through our physically present "Parents". A Mother can take the place of all others but no one else can take her place.A Father's love may not be expressed, but he remains a pillar of strength throughout our life. Our scriptures emphasize the fact that Parents are equal to God. A wise king was able to find out the real mother of a child as the true mother could not see her child suffer. A father proved to be always near his son whenever he needed him. In the contest between Lord Ganesha and his brother Lord Muruga, Lord Ganesha cleverly used the point that His Parents meant the World to Him and emerged as the winner. Pundalik, the ardent devotee of Lord Krishna ,had devoted his later life to serving his aged parents. When Lord Krishna visited him, he offered the Lord a brick as a seat and asked Him to wait till he finished his "seva"(service) to parents. The Lord stood with his arms akimbo on the brick (arms bent at the elbows with hands on hips). The Lord later granted Pundalik's wish that the Lord, in Vithoba form remain on the brick with Rukmini in Rakhumai form and bless His devotees forever( Story of Vithoba Temple in Pandharpur). Nobody can love and care for us more than our parents. Their greatness is higher than the mountains and deeper than the seas.
